In what was surely the most exciting personal appearance in Springfield, Illinois since Barack Obama announced his run for the presidency two months ago, actress Bo Derek, a rare Hollywood Republican, visited the state capital last week to lobby for a passage of a bill banning the slaughtering of horses for human consumption.
Since I began writing about this topic about three weeks ago, I've learned opposition to the practice cuts party lines. Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY) and Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) are the principal sponsors of a federal bill to ban the practice nationwide. Unfortunately, one of the bill's co-sponsors is loony-left Congresscritter Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who "represents" me in the lower house. I'm getting a little off subject, but Jan and her goons got thrashed last week as they tried to topple longtime Chicago Alderman Bernie Stone in the 50th Ward.
In Springfield, the horse-slaughter bill lagged for a few years, probably because Illinois was home to one of three horse meat processing plants in the nation, and Prairie State slaughter house was in former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's district.
Having the state bill become law is largely symbolic, as that plant closed last month due to a federal ruling on Department of Agriculture inspectors.
