Mary Mitchell: Did Sheila Simon really deserve lt guv nomination?

The Chicago Sun-Times' Mary Mitchell questions whether Sheila Simon deserved the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.

Simon was last on Quinn's list of possible running mates, and understandably so.

A law professor at Southern Illinois University, Simon previously served in the Carbondale city council, but was unsuccessful in a run for mayor of the college town.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Here is a woman who still goes by her famous father's surname, yet she could not win a local election downstate.

But she plays banjo and bassoon in the band Loose Gravel, which, as I wrote yesterday, performs the song "Pope Knop," which is about the Barbie-underwear garbed first female pope, a little girl "who loves to dance around when she's half bare" and who "knows her holy water from Mountain Dew."
