Johnny Cash: The Big Light

After almost thirty years of making records for Columbia, Johnny Cash was dropped from that label. In 1987 he recorded his first of five albums for Mercury, none of were not critically or commercially successful. Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town was the first of these efforts, and it includes an Elvis Costello cover, "The Big Light," which had been recorded the prior year for Costello's fabulous King of America

In this live performance, Cash is joined by the Carter Family, and it contrasts with Costello's straightforward version with Elvis Presley's old backup band supporting him.
