Little Gippers Preschool, Calumet, Michigan

This afternoon, Notre Dame defeated Purdue 10-7. Among its many great football players, one of the best known is George Gipp, a native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Gipp, the Fighting Irish's first All American, died at 25 in 1920 a few weeks after playing his last game. Eight years later, Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne invoked the memory of Gipp, during his famous "Win one for the Gipper" speech during halftime of a game against arch rival Army.

In 1940, a young actor named Ronald Reagan played Gipp in Knute Rockne All American

Little Gippers Child Development Center is in Calumet, Michigan, where Gipp is buried. The great athlete grew up in nearby Laurium. Both towns are on the Keewenaw Peninsula.
