There is big news regarding the Employee Free Choice Act this evening. Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) told a Little Rock audience, "I cannot support Employee Free Choice Act in its current form and I can't support efforts to bring it to Senate consideration in its current form." This is devastating news to supporters of card check. Unions had been hoping if Al Franken ends up getting sworn in--giving Democrats 59 votes--all they would need was one Republican defection to succeed in a cloture vote. But that hope was diminished when Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), who supported EFCA in 2007, announced that he would vote against card check.
Now the Dems have to shore up their ranks.
Lincoln's fellow Arkansas Democrat, Mark Pryor, is working on a card check compromise, but he's not considered a solid supporter of EFCA.
