The fish heads in this story are boxed up in Detroit.
From Cal Skinner's McHenry County Blog:
Mayo Underwood runs a certified organic, heirloom seed, plant and supply firm called Underwood Gardens. It's located east of Woodstock, Illinois.
(My note: Woodstock in about forty miles northwest of Chicago.)
After 15 years old in business, Underwood has run afoul of the Homeland Security Department.
She was giving a talk in Fairbury (near Bloomington, IL) to a group of organic farmers about two weeks ago. They had expected her to bring down cases of concentrated liquid plant food made from wild Canadian salmon heads.
They didn't know whether to laugh or cry when she told them that the shipment had been held up in customs in Detroit "as a threat to homeland security."
Well, the fish head plant food probably doesn't smell very good. I've used fish emulsion fluid as fertilizer for my house plans; one day I forgot to put the top on the bottle, and man, did my place smell awful the next day.
Underwood has worked her way up the government's chain of command to get her shipment released. Most distressing was the response of Melissa Bean (D-Barrington), her representative in Congress.
On July 5, Underwood contacted Bean...
More from the McHenry County Blog:
A letter dated July 9th came back from Bean’s office asking "to allow 30 to 60 days for a response."
Then a Bean staffer left an answering machine message, that "it takes 60-90 days to get a response."
But after some pleading, Underwood was told by a representative from Bean's office, "You might have an answer in ten days."
Monday will be ten days.
Other Illinois members of Congress, who have been contacted on the stuck-in-Detroit fish heads--but just in the last few days, are Senators Barack Obama, Dick Durbin, and Republican Rep. Dan Manzullo (R-Rockford). None of the congressional offices have gotten back to Ms. Underwood.
Let her fish heads go. Or if the fish head liquid is truly a threat to national security, then tell those central Illinois farmers that their plant food isn't coming.
