Univ of Michigan backtracks on decision to cancel showing of American Sniper

For once sanity wins out on an American college campus.

From MLive.com:
The University of Michigan late Wednesday night released a statement saying that "it was a mistake to cancel" a showing of Clint Eastwood's controversial movie "American Sniper."

"The initial decision to cancel the movie was not consistent with the high value the University of Michigan places on freedom of expression and our respect for the right of students to make their own choices in such matters," Rick Fitzgerald, university spokesman, wrote in an email issued around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

It's just the latest in the choice to screen the film on campus.

It was originally scheduled to be shown at the "UMix Late Night" program Friday night. Then nearly 300 protesters spoke out, saying the film perpetuates "negative and misleading stereotypes" against Muslims.
The reporter called American Sniper "controversial." Really? It was the top grossing film of 2014.

As for the "negative and misleading stereotypes" about Muslims in the movie, a character known as the Butcher tortures victims, presumably also Muslims, with a power drill.

While of course the great majority of Muslims are not terrorists, most terrorists are Muslims. And most of the world's conflicts involve Muslims on one side of the war--and sometimes both.

Think about that.
