On this day in 1865: Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox

Tampico, Illinois
The American Civil war essentially ended on this date in 1865 when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.

Two of my ancestors, Patrick Curran (5th Pennsylvania) and Joseph Henry Ruberry (23rd Illinois) were present at Appomattox on that day.

Roughly 750,000 soldiers and sailors--all of them Americans--lost their lives in the Civil War.
