While walking across the Galena Avenue bridge over the Rock River--she noticed a flock of white pelicans near the Dixon Dam, a low-head dam on the Rock.
As I've written before, low-head dams are dangerous to kayakers and canoeists. Yes, there are a couple of pelicans in this photo.
A closer look at the pelicans with the dam.
Unlike brown pelicans, their white cousins don't dive--they used their large bills to capture food such as fish and amphibians.
White pelicans are among the largest birds in North America. Behind these waterfowl is the remains of an old bridge.
