Our early democracy was fragile--which was why Abraham Lincoln was compelled to lead the Union to victory in the Civil War. Following the disaster of the French Revolution--a split of the Great Republic could have perhaps forever tainted democracy as a doomed system of government.

As Rockin' the Right Side notes today, Our Nation Nearly Committed Suicide.

That's something to think about on the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Battle of Vicksburg.
