Washington recrosses the Delaware on Christmas

In National Review Online, Rich Lowry writes about America's first Christmas--which was almost its last. But General George Washington led his ragged army across the Delaware River into New Jersey on Christmas Day in 1776 and surprised the German mercenaries who were fighting for King George III. It gave the Continental Army a much needed victory.

In one of my favorite traditions, each Christmas the crossing is recreated. And once again, the Hessians were surprised when the patriots found them on the New Jersey side of the river.
