July 4, 1863: Confederates surrender at Vicksburg

On this date in 1863, Confederate forces under General John C. Pemberton, a Pennsylvanian by the way, surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, dealing the South a fatal one-two punch. On the same day, General Robert E. Lee began his retreat after his defeat at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
