News I missed: Senate cmte denies Gitmo North funds

A little more than a week after a House unanimously blocked funds to transfer Guantanamo Bay terrorists to the proposed "Gitmo North" facility in Thomson, Illinois, the Senate Armed Services Committee also chose not to fund the move.

Last week Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-MI, told reporters, "The money for a prison in Illinois was struck...a prison available to house detainees from Gitmo. That was a voice vote. A clear majority voted 'AYE.' I and a few others voted against striking those funds."

When plans for the proposed Gitmo North was announced, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) called it "a dream come true."

It's now a dream deferred. Hopefully forever.
