Michigan's tourism advertising budget low on cash

Here's a story you may have missed: Michigan does not have the funds to adequately promote its "Pure Michigan" tourism campaign, and its "Upper Hand" promotion--featuring Michigander Jeff Daniels--designed to attract businesses to the Great Lake State.

The state's tourism promotion budget was $30 million last year and it is just $5 million in 2010.

Michigan has the nation's highest unemployment rate, but turned down--albeit at the local level--the chance to host Gitmo North in a now-shuttered prison in Standish.

But Illinois, led by Governor Pat Quinn and Senator Dick Durbin, jumped at the chance to host at least 100 hardened terrorists currently being detained at Guantanamo Bay in Thomson. Durbin called it "a dream come true." Michgan felt differently.

Speaking of Gitmo, Friday is the one year anniversary of President Obama signing an executive order to close the terrorist detention facility with one year.

That's one promise I'm glad Obama hasn't kept. Keep the enemy combatants in Cuba.

"Pure Michigan" is in trouble, while Illinois is poorly run.
