Chicago Sun-Times: Obama headed to Denmark to pitch Chicago Olympics bid

The Chicago Sun-Times' Michael Sneed is reporting that President Obama has "told a select coterie Saturday he has decided to go to Copenhagen to personally pitch Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympics."

The International Olympic Committee will meet in the Danish capital on October 2 and decide between Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio de Janiero-the winner gets the games.

It'll be a close contest, Madrid is believed to be the only city not likely to prevail.

The word on the streets of Washington--and Chicago--is that Obama is too busy tussling with health care to travel to Denmark for the ICO summit. My guess is that Obama, by bagging the Olympics for his hometown, will show Americans he's a winner. But the games, with which Chicagoans have a love-late relationship, don't have anything to do with ObamaCare.

On the downside, if the games end up elsewhere, Obama might get blamed for the loss.

2016 is a long way away, I have no idea where I'll be living then, but if the Summer Olympics come to Chicago, I'll be applying for media credentials.

But for now, only Michelle Obama has officially committed to the final pitch for Chicago in Copenhagen.
