Todd Stroger, the ward-heeler lovingly endorsed by Barack Obama three years ago, won his election to become president of the Cook County Board. Last year the leader of the vast county patronage army slapped Cook County residents with a sales tax hike--forcing people like myself to pay the nation's highest sales tax.This afternoon, the county board voted 12-3 to repeal the hated tax. John Daley, brother of Chicago's mayor and a close Stroger ally, voted with the majority.
But a couple of other Stroger-bots missed the vote, and they're expected to vote for what's known here as the corruption tax after Stroger vetoes the repeal.

Note to national Republicans looking for ways to grow the party in Illinois: This is the issue folks are angry about in the Chicago area. Elsewhere in Blagojevichland, voters are angry that his successor and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly are maneuvering to increase the state income tax by fifty percent.
Illinoisans are looking for change they can believe in.
