Palatine mayor still considering seceding from Cook County to escape Stroger's corruption tax

Tomorrow is Election Day in many Illinois communities. Palatine Mayor Rita Mullins is running for another four year term. She may want to keep doing that job, but not with Palatine in Cook County. Last year, Cook County Board President Todd "Corruption Tax" Stroger raised the county sales tax, giving suburbanites the nation's second-highest sales tax at 10 percent. Chicagoans suffer with the highest rate.

The Chicago Sun-Times has more:

Mullins is the strongest proponent among the candidates of exploring secession as a way of escaping what some see as a lack of services and an unfair burden of taxes imposed by Cook County -- especially since county officials recently raised the sales tax by 1 percentage point.

"I think forming another county would be worth looking at,'' Mullins said recently -- though she said state law needs to be changed first to make the process easier and more politically attractive.

Can Morton Grove join you, Ms. Mullins?
