I have to add that with Abe Lincoln it's gone around in some college classrooms and potentially beyond that there is an argument he never actually freed the slaves. There's a good chance some young people believe that argument. Of course it seems if you ever held any "non-inclusive" views whether or not you've changed your mind in later years it's still held against you.
It's true that on the day it was issued the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free a single slave. Then the Union army advanced. But Lincoln was a driving force behind the 13th Amendment.
