Conyers finally quits, endorses son to replace him

Reputed sexual predator US Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) resigned today after several accusations of sexual assault became public. In what must be a Detroit area tradition, Conyers endorsed his son to replace him.

John Dingell Jr succeeded his father as a member of Congress in the Detroit area. And who is serving in Dingell's old seat now? His wife.

Conyers' resignation is effective immediately.

In addition to his alleged sexual attacks, Conyers was investigated by the House Ethics committee in 2006 for allegedly forcing staff members to run personal errands for him, babysit his kids, and to work on local political campaigns. Two of the sexual assault complaints came from ex-staffers.

Conyers estranged wife, Monica, the onetime president pro tempore of the Detroit City Council, served time in federal prison for bribery. While she was incarcerated, John was the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Meanwhile those John Conyers Boulevard commemorative street signs remain in downtown Detroit.
