Italy suffered a devastating defeat in a battle that began 100 years ago today in the Alps at Caporetto at the hands of Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in what is now Slovenia. Over one-quarter of a million Italians were captured. Lt. Erwin Rommel.with just 100 soldiers captured 100 Italians.
On the bright side a lot of prime Italian service rifles hit the surplus market, "never fired and only dropped once".
ReplyDeleteIt was an Italian Army meltdown. In a World War I documentary that I saw recently, Rommel was carried on his shoulders by his Italian captors. I left it out of this post because I couldn't remember for sure if it was Caporetto.
