On this day in 1066: The Battle of Hastings

It was 950 years ago today when the Norman army of William the Bastard defeated the English army led by King Harold Godwinson in the Battle of Hastings. William, who was crowned king later that year on Christmas, was able to dispose of his "Bastard" nickname, becoming William the Conqueror. England, the English language, and the world would be a much different place afterwards.

As for Harold, the last English king from the House of Wessex, Alfred the Great's house, didn't survive the battle.

And if you suffer from an unfortunate nickname, there's a way out for you: conquer a nation.
