Detroit Open School is now closed |
From Fox Detroit:
Fourteen people are now facing federal corruption charges including twelve Detroit Public School principals. One of those charged is Ronald Alexander, the principal at Charles L. Spain Elementary Middle School. His school is on tap to receive $500,000 in donations from Ellen DeDeneres.
They are accused of running a kickback scheme for school supplies that rarely made it to classrooms. Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against 12 current or former principals, an assistant superintendent, and a DPS vendor of school supplies, Norman Shy.
"A case like this is a real punch in the gut for those who are trying to do the right thing," said Barbara McQuade, US Attorney, Eastern District of Michigan. "Documents allege that Shy conspired with the 13 individual school officials," McQuade said. "They didn't conspire with each other, but he paid bribes to each of those school officials."
Only a state bailout of DPS can save it from insolvency. How did it get into that predicament?
Last year former senior DPS senior officer Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was Mayor Rahm Emanuel's handpicked choice to run Chicago Public Schools, pleaded guilty for her role in a CPS bribery scheme.
As I've said before, if Al Capone was around today he'd be a public school big shot. That's where the big money is.
