(Photos) Downtown Three Rivers, Michigan

Despite Meijer and Wal-Mart big box stores on US 131 on the western edge of town, Three Rivers, Michigan has a stable downtown centered on, of course, Main Street.

The Downtown Three Rivers Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Three Rivers gets its name from the Portage, Rocky, and St. Joseph Rivers--each of these waterways flows through the town.

Big city movie palaces built in the 1920s liked to name themselves after exotic locales. Small towns did so too--Three Rivers has the Riviera Theatre.

That's Mrs. Marathon Pundit on the left.

The former First State Savings Bank is part of the Carnegie Center for the Arts...

...as is the old library--a Carnegie library.

About eight thousand people live in Three Rivers. Surrounding the town are some large summer camps, including Habonim Dror Camp Tavor, YMCA's Camp Eberhart, Camp Wakeshma, as well as the Latvian Center Garezers. Little Marathon Pundit used to attend that last one.

Three Rivers is about 40 miles south of Kalamazoo.

There's an almost-European feel in this scene.

I have purchased a few items at Lowry's Books.

Up on top is a ghost sign that reads "Marble Works."

Many roads lead to Three Rivers.
