(Photos) Forest Lawn Memorial Park - Hollywood Hills: Birth of Liberty mosaic

Late last year Mrs. Marathon Pundit and Little Marathon Pundit visited the famous Forest Lawn Memorial Park - Hollywood Hills cemetery in Los Angeles, where many well known actors are buried.

The mosaic is 162 feet long and 28 feet high and it is the largest mosaic of a historical nature in America. It is composed of ten million pieces of Venetian glass and depicts 25 scenes of early America--from 1619 through 1776.


"God gave us liberty. Those who forsake God, lose their liberty."

This part of the mosaic commemorates the first legislative meeting in 1619 in Jamestown.


The left half of the mosaic--the caption is from Galatians: "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free."


The signing of the Declaration of Independence.


Liberty Chapel--yes, it's outdoors but this is southern California. Carved on the granite is a passage from the Declaration of Independence.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

  1. That is not "The Signing" of the Declaration of Independence. The title is simply "Declaration of Independence". It depicts the initial presentation of the Declaration for consideration. It was not accepted and signed until much later.
