(Exclusive photos) The new segment of the Cal-Sag Trail

It's been a long time since the Marathon Pundit has done a running related post, but the time is right.

I visited my mother Sunday for--you guessed it, Mother's Day. Mom still lives in Palos Heights, Illinois. The town west of it is Palos Park--and it will soon be graced by an extension of the Cal-Sag Trail. Cal-Sag is short for Calumet-Saganashkee.

Take a close look at the center of the sign's logo.

Pictured here is the Cal-Sag Channel. (This photograph was taken in 2014.) If you look closely you will see three of the truss bridges that cross the waterway. The canal is 16 miles long and runs between the Little Calumet River in Calumet Park until it meets the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lemont.

Where the old meets the new--the end of the east segment of the trail.

A miniature trail truss bridge spans the a tiny creek.

West of the bridge the trail is still unpaved. When I was in high school I would sometimes run on the very rough rubble-strewn make shift path along the bank of the canal. People have it much easier these days.

The marked path rises over a small ridge.

A trail-view of the Cal-Sag.

Bike or drive? On the left is the Cal-Sag Trail. On the right is Illinois state Route 83. The grand opening of the trail will occur on June 6--National Trails Day. But while wait until then? You can run, bike, or walk there now.

Eventually the Cal-Sag Trail will connect with the Centennial Trail in Willow Springs.
