On this day in 1980: Miracle on Ice for Team USA

The word "miracle" is used a lot in covering sports, but truly it was a Miracle on Ice on this day in 1980--George Washington's Birthday--when a group of college kids defeated a professional team in all but name in Lake Placid, New York. Yes, the USA Olympic hockey team beat the Soviet Olympicans 4-3.

The Americans later went on to win the gold medal. I remember these games as if it was last week.

Pictured below is a bronze statue of Herb Brooks, Team USA's coach, which is at the entrance of the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Brooks was born in St. Paul.
