It was a great day for freedom on this day in 1989. The Berlin Wall fell, or more accurately, the people of Berlin tore down the Wall.

Earlier that year communism collapsed in Poland and Hungary, the day after the Wall was pulled down, Bulgaria's ruler was forced out of office. And in December, freedom came to Czechoslovakia and Romania, although at a great cost in lives in the latter case.

Two year earlier Ronald Reagan famously said in Berlin, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

But the Germans beat Gorby to it.
