(Photos) Dewes family pioneer cemetery in Golf, Illinois

The Glen View Club of Golf, Illinois sits on land that was originally part of the Dewes Family Homestead that was founded in 1825--fifteen years later John Dewes purchased the land.

A small family graveyard, the Dewes Family Cemetery, is on the club's land, It is fenced off and surrounded by trees and the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River.

The sign reads, Dewes Cemetery, "Members of families: Dewes, Harrison, Ward, Goebel, Lupton, and Zobus. Matt Nixon-Troop 32 Eagle Scout Project, May 28, 2005."

With one exception, all of the gravestones, and there are about eight, are on the opposite end.

Here are more than half of the surviving gravestones.

A closer look: The tall marker contains the only readable name: Harrison. FindAGrave.com lists only two internments at Dewes.

Beneath last fall's oak leaves is someone's final resting place.

Yes, the cemetery is completely fenced off. But I, the knower of all things, got inside.

These two bits of stone were the only items that resembles a grave marker on the northern end of Dewes Cemetery.
