(Photo) Signs for US Route 6 and the I&M National Heritage Corridor

US Route 6 and the Illinois and Michigan Canal run roughly parallel to each other from Lockport until Peru, where the canal ends. This photograph was taken outside of Utica, just outside of what is arguably Illinois' best-loved state park, Starved Rock.

US 6, also known as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, runs from the the tip of Cape Cod to eastern California--its former terminus was in Long Beach.

Ronald Reagan, a northern Illinois native, signed the bill that created the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor--the first such endeavor of its kind--in 1984.
