ILL-inois: Ex-Chicago alderman pulls off unprecedented criminal hat trick

A Chicago politician achieved a hat trick yesterday--and it has nothing to do with hockey.

From CBS Chicago:
Former Chicago Ald. Ambrosio Medrano pleaded guilty Tuesday to wire fraud, and prosecutors want to send him to prison for about 20 years.

Medrano secured his place in Chicago's political hall of shame last June when he became the first current or former alderman convicted in two separate, prior corruption cases.

Medrano is expected to ask to be sentenced to 21 to 27 months in prison in this latest case.

This time, federal prosecutors accused Medrano of taking bribes and kickbacks to sell bandages to public hospitals including Stroger Hospital.
Is a gland slam in Medrano's future?

Since 1972, 31 sitting or current members of Chicago's City Council have been convicted of crimes, the most recent one is Sandi Jackson, the wife of Jesse Jackson Jr., of the 7th Ward.

Chicagoans keep electing brigands to office. In a democracy the voters get the government they deserve.
