On this day 150 years ago: Siege of Vicksburg ends

Vicksburg battlefield in 2008
It was a happy July 4th for Union forces as the Siege of Vicksburg ended with the surrender of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton Confederates in 1863

The Northerners were led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant. The Vicksburg capitulation came the day after the Southern defeat at Gettysburg. While it may have been the turning point of the Civil War, nearly two years of fierce fighting remained.

Below you will find my Vicksburg-related posts. I visited the battlefield in 2008.
