Big loss for Big Labor: Harkin retiring from Senate in 2014

Big Labor had another bad day today. Although he represents Iowa--a right-to-work state, Sen. Tom Harkin is possibly the most pro-union Democrat in the US Senate--and the competition for that title is fierce.

Harkin hinted several times that he would try to sneak Big Labor's Holy Grail into law--the anti-democratic (small "d") menace to job creation known as union card check. Thankfully, he wasn't able to pull it off.

Harkin announced today that he will not run for reelection next year.

The current pushback against Big Labor is strongest in the Upper Midwest. While Harkin's seat is by no means a likely Republican pick-up, it's hard to imagine Hawkeyes voting in a Democrat who matches Harkin's zeal for unions. Even finding such a creature will be a challenge in Iowa.
