Red, white and blue turkey and friend

Turkeys aren't native to the Old World, which was one of the reasons that Benjamin Franklin proposed that the fowl to be named our national bird. Domesticated turkeys, however, were brought to the eastern hemisphere many years before Franklin was born.

And on her cousin's farm in Aknīste, Latvia last summer, Mrs. Marathon Pundit found these birds--including an appropriately colored red, white, and blue turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
