(Photo) California alligator lizard

While visiting the Napa Valley vineyards in 2009, I saw plenty of California alligator lizards. They're common  in populated areas. They primarily eat insects, slugs, and snails--and on occasion small mammals and birds, as well as bird eggs.

Watch out if you encounter one--these reptiles bite.
