Headstone of Irving Henry Palmer--who was killed in the Philippine Insurrection

While Korea is typically referred to as "the Forgotten War," in fact it is the Philippine Insurrection that is the real forgotten war. More Americans died in that conflict than perished in the preceding Spanish-American War.

The Philippines of course became an American possession in 1898 after the defeat of the Spanish. The insurrection, really a war, lasted officially until 1902, but fighting continued in the Muslim south until 1913.

One of the men who gave his life for our country in the Philippines was Irving Henry Palmer. He was 21 when he was killed on November 19, 1899 near Santa Thomas on Luzon Island--113 years ago today. Palmer served in Troop A of the 3rd U.S. Cavalry.

He is buried in Fort Sheridan Cemetery in Lake Forest, Illinois--just north of the old army base.
