(Photos and video) Hurricane Sandy winds and high waves on Lake Michigan

While I believe it's impossible for a hurricane to strike Illinois, the effects of one can be felt here. As I did yesterday, I traveled to the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Highland Park, Illinois.

The lake was looking a lot like the Atlantic or the Pacific today. Waves as high as 22 feet were reported in Chicago. I didn't see any that big at Fort Sheridan.

Although the temperature was in the mid-40s, the air had a wintery bite to it.

The view from a 70 foot high bluff. As for Fort Sheridan, it was a US Army base from 1887 until 1993. It was named for General Phil Sheridan.

Roll the tape...video from the same location. To assist the victims of the hurricane, please contribute to the Red Cross. You can also donate by texting REDCROSS to 90999.
