Romney is right: Obama is turning us into an entitlement society

A tough-talking Mitt Romney made a so-called gaffe that was surreptiously videotapted when he told the truth to campaign donors: Obama is turning this nation of achievers into an entitlement society.

Here is what he said.
There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what . . . he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. . . . I mean that's what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
It's about time we had a leader who told the truth, even if it was not phrased as eloquently as it could have been.

People don't come to America--my wife certainly didn't--for government handouts. Well, maybe they do now. If that's true we can fault Obama.

By the way, why isn't the media pounding Obama over our unpreparedness in the Middle East that has led to  four American deaths? The White House insists on blaming this rage on a sub-Ed Wood YouTube video.

UPDATE September 18: Obama addressed those comments and defended them last night. Click here for the video. He said among other things that Obama "favors a government centered economy."

The irony is that Mitt is likely part of the 47% who pay no income tax, and to whom he so derisively refers. Of course, we'll never know, since he refuses to release his tax returns. If I didn't know better, I'd think Mitt was trying to lose this election. Particularly since those who fall into the 47% category disproportionately live in red states. Pretty soon, he'll have no base left.

The day everyone on the Right who owns a home gives up their mortgage tax deduction (a government giveaway that is the second largest entitlement), then I'll actually believe these arguments.

  3. First anon: In the return he released, it showed that Romney in fact paid taxes and donated quite a bit of money to charity.

Second anon: A conservative here and there has suggested dropping the mortgage tax deduction--while lowering overall income tax rates.

Obama is the king of the lazy. He's the king of the Judas! He's the king of the godless.
