John W. Eaves, the St. Louis firm's CEO, had this to say about the closures: "Current market pressures and a challenging regulatory environment [emphasis mine] have pushed coal consumption in the United States to a 20-year low."
Obama has been waging his War on Coal since he was a candidate--this layoff carnage should surprise no one. "If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can," Obama said in 2008, "it's just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted." Obama's destructive EPA has been attacking the coal industry ever since he was sworn into office.
Even Democrats are taking notice of these assaults. Coal country politicians Gov. Roy Tomblin, Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia have bailed attending the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, as has Rep. Mark Critz of Pennsylvania.
Arch accounts for 16 percent of our nation's coal production.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) slammed the White House's War on Coal yesterday in comments about the Arch layoffs.
