From Delaware Online:
Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker today ordered members of Occupy Delaware to vacate Spencer Plaza, saying individuals at the tent encampment have desecrated the "sacred gravesite" of African-American religious leader Peter Spencer with public drunkenness, drug use and destruction of public property.I love that the mayor, a Democrat, wants the leftists gone on May Day.
Spencer, who founded the A.U.M.P. Church, the first black independent Church in the country, is buried at the site along with his wife and six others.
The group must dismantle the camp site by May 1, according to a city news release announcing Baker's directive. Occupy Delaware has created a "public nuisance" that has prevented others from using the public space, Baker said.
"The city does not intend to preclude Occupy Delaware from the legitimate exercise of its First Amendment rights," Baker said in a statement. "But the indefinite seizure of public property is not protected speech."

The city chose that spot for them! Rev. Spencer was a civil rights leader, so he would probably have been occupying with them. The drug incident happened blocks away and the homeless kid mentioned the Occupy group because he was scared and they were the only ones trying to help him for free. Drugs and alchohol in the city are more of the city's responsibilty than an Occupy group. Media????? scapegoat politics
ReplyDeleteUh, did you leave similar comments on the Delaware Online site? They said the mayor was making these claims about desecration.
