Video: Dick Morris on Chicago and Illinois' pathetic politics

"There is nothing more pathetic in American politics," Fox News' analyst Dick Morris said last night, "than the Republican Party of Chicago. And it's time we ended that."

As recently as the 1990s, I recall, Republican candidates for governor would win a few Chicago wards. Now the GOP is shut out there.

Morris was in town for a fundraiser for a William J. Kelly, who is running for 43rd Ward GOP committeeman. The event was held in the famous Signature Room of the John Hancock Building.

Kelly is on Morris' left in my YouTube video.

Chicago is in dire straits, Morris said. "It's right at the beginning of that death cycle that goes on with cities, where they keep raising taxes on the people that can pay, keep using the money to give to everybody else, keep driving out the tax base. They keep raising taxes, raising spending...until eventually you have an empty hole."

Illinois doesn't fare much better, Morris added. "There is no state where it is more self-evident that the concoctions of the Democratic liberal mainstream don't work. It's fine until, as Margaret Thatcher said, until you run out of other people's money. And Illinois is running out of it very quickly."

While Illinois' credit rating has sunk, Governor Scott Walker's Wisconsin has risen, he also asserted.

"Increasingly businesses are just moving out to any of those states with Republican governors--Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin," Morris concluded. "They're just fleeing to those places. Increasingly they are voting with their feet to change Illinois and Chicago. We need to get them to vote with their hands."

Morris then praised Kelly, who will be the topic of my next post in this series.

My good friend Warner Todd Huston was at the event as well--read his report here.
