Photos: Mayor Emanuel's holiday tree

For all its weaknesses--and there are many--Chicago has never bowed to the PC-pull to call its Christmas tree a "holiday tree."

That is, until Rahm Emanuel was sworn in as mayor.

There it is: the Tiny Dancer's tree is a 55 foot tall Colorado blue spruce that was harvested in suburban Western Springs. Rhode Island's governor, Lincoln Chaffee, is breaking with Ocean State precedent by calling their Christmas tree a holiday tree as well.

That's Chicago's Christkindlmarket. Christkind, is German for Christ-child.

Just in case you think I was making this up, I provide proof. So, if there is a Christkindlmarket Chicago, why can't there be an official Chicago Christmas tree? As for holiday tree, normal people do not use that phrase. Just as they never say "grocer's dairy case."

But there is some good news, and as has been the case of last, those tidings come with the north wind. Wisconsin's governor, Scott Walker, dropped the holiday tree moniker for Madison's Christmas tree.
