Cook County considering cigarette tax hikes despite falling revenue from current tobacco taxes

Cash-strapped Cook County, Illinois, where I live, is seeking to raise cigarette taxes again, partly because the last tobacco tax hike isn't bringing in as much money as anticipated.

Yes, you read that right.

As I've explained many times before, increasing cigarette taxes compel people purchase product on the internet, in another state, or in another county.

For instance, the enterprising gas station owner on Lake-Cook Road is on the Lake County side of the street and is telling motorists that his cigarettes are cheaper. If the Cook County Board gets its way with the new taxes, look for this merchant to purchase a neon version of this sign.
