Last World War I combatant dies in Australia

Doughboy Monument,
Morton Grove, IL
Claude Choules, who served with the British Navy during World War I, died in his sleep today in Australia at 110. After the death of Frank Buckles of West Virginia in February, Choules, who also served in the Australian Navy during World War II, was declared the last living combatant from the Great War.

70 million men and women were part of the Allied and Central Powers war effort.

Great Britain's 110 year-old Florence Green, who was a waitress for the Women's Royal Air Force--obviously a non-combat post--is the last veteran from "the war to end all wars."
