International Pancake Day Race: Kansas beats England again

In 1445, according to legend, a woman in Olney, England was finishing up her cooking fats on Shrove Tuesday--which were forbidden during Lent then--and when she heard the church bells ring, she ran to church still wearing her apron. And she was grasping a skillet which still held a pancake. Since then, women of the Buckinghamshire town have raced 415 yards each Shrove Tuesday--donned with an apron, head scarf, and a pancake and a frying plan.

It was race day again. In 1950, Liberal, Kansas challenged Olney for feminine pancake supremacy--and a rivalry was born.

Today is Shrove Tuesday--and International Pancake Race Day. And Nicole Schowengerdt of Liberal finished her Kansas 415 yard run in 63 seconds this morning in icy conditions, nine seconds faster than the first across the line in England. It was the fifth straight women for the women of the Sunflower State--Liberal leads Olney 36 to 25.
