Harrer Butcher Shop, Skokie

In a couple of posts in the last week I slapped Maharishi Univervsity of Management for razing buildings on its campus that were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the interest of preservation, I thought I'd post a picture of a listed site near my home, the former Harrer Butcher Shop on Lincoln Avenue in Skokie, Illinois.

Michael Harrer, the uncle of Adam Harrer, the first mayor of Niles Center, Skokie's former name, opened the shop in 1874. It is now a residence. Adam's brother George became the first mayor of Morton Grove, where I live.

History is everywhere. Although it's less noticeable when it's bulldozed.
