Chicago mayoral race: Noticing a notary problem

Chicago's mayoral election is getting increasingly bizarre. Last week the Chicago Sun-Times reported that four sets of nominating petitions, those of state Senator James Meeks and Rob Halpin, contain apparently forged notary signatures. That's against the law, of course.

Halpin, by the way, is Rahm Emanuel's tenant.

Now another notary says his 2,000 signatures on petitions for former Senator Carol Moseley Braun and Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins are phony.

Jesse White, Illinois' secretary of state, is investigating. Meanwhile Chicago's current mayor, Richard M. Daley, is calling for a federal probe.

As for Van-Pelt Watkins, she calls herself a community organizer.

Oh, dear.

  1. What in the world are y'all doing in Illinois? Is there not an honest politician in the whole state?

    Yes, they are rhetorical.

I don't know but I'm suspicious of the whole affair. What if Rahm had the other petitions sabotaged. Obama, his good friend, won his first two offices by eliminating opponents at the petition phase -- knocked them off the ballot. It's sneaky and so is Rahm.

  3. Well, Paul...my family is here. As for bahhhh....I think there is something like 20 candidates. Rahm can't knock all of them off, can he?

  4. No, John, I meant, what is the electorate doing in Illinois? Why can't the folks there find anyone that is not a criminal or a dishonest individual to run? I just find it hard to believe that there is not a single honest person that wants to run for office, but it certainly appears that way.

  5. Well, we have Bobby Schilling a pizzeria owner from the Rock Island area. He beat a Democratic congessman who ran unopposed in 2008. Schilling says he will not accept a pay raise and won't go on the gov't health care plan.

    Oh, he has ten kids.

  6. With ten kids, I am certain that he knows how to pinch a penny, too.

I've just got the one kid and I could not even imagine having ten. Wow.
