ILSen: Chicago Trib endorses Kirk; Sun-Times, which endorsed Blago in '06, backs Mob Banker

The Chicago Tribune this afternoon gave a strong endorsement to Mark Kirk for the open US Senate seat in Illinois. Currently, Rod Blagojevich-appointee Roland Burris holds that office.

From the Tribune endorsement:

Today the Tribune endorses Kirk, a Republican, for the U.S. Senate seat that Roland Burris soon vacates. To understand our verdict, watch Giannoulias and Kirk's appearance before us this week. You'll find the video at chicagotribune.com/senate. Judge each man's depth and preparedness for the job. Judge knowledge and scope. Judge accomplishment. Judge which candidate has a proven record of thoughtful independence — of bucking his party when the good of this nation is at stake. You won't have difficulty making these judgments.
Earlier this week Kirk gained endorsements from the Northwest Herald and the Pioneer Press.

But leave it to the Chicago Sun-Times, which endorsed Blago for governor in 2006, to back Mob Banker Alexi Giannoulias instead of Kirk.

Its endorsement is so bad, it doesn't even measure up to the standard of being wrong. Hold your nose:

The Kirk campaign tries to tie Giannoulias as closely as possible to the failure of his family's Broadway Bank, but our own reading of that sad story is that Giannoulias probably had little to do with the bank's failure -- or its earlier success.
Puh-leaze! All we heard from Giannoulias when he was running his first political position is that "We need a banker in the treasurer's office." Four years later the Mob Banker can't even get his story straight on his departure from Broadway in 2005--or was it 2006?
