Rep. Cheeks Kilpatrick defeated in Mich. Dem primary, and the revenge of the nerd

Could the voters of Michigan finally be achieving sanity? There is good news in Detroit--Rep. Cheeks Kilpatrick was defeated in Tuesday's Democratic primary election by state Senator Hansen Clarke in the 13th congressional district.

Her son is former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who is currently imprisoned in a state penitentiary for a parole violation. He pleaded guilty to a obstruction of justice charges in 2008; in June he was indicted on 19 federal counts of fraud centered around campaign fund abuse.

Cheeks Kilpatrick was called in twice to testify in front of a grand jury in regards to the federal case against her son--she has not been accused of any crimes.

The 13th is heavily Democratic, Clarke is the heavy favorite in November.

In another race of note, political newcomer Rick Snyder, a self-described nerd, is the Republican nominee for governor in the Great Lakes State, he'll face Democrat Virg Bernero. Rep. Pete Hoekstra finished second in the GOP race--2010 is the wrong year for a congressmen of any party to run for a state office, even for an effective public servant such as Hoekstra.

Call it the revenge of the nerd.
