CORRECTED: Federal probe subpoenas WV Gov. Manchin, 2012 Dem Senate candidate

West Virginia Watchdog is exclusively reporting this evening that Mountain State Governor Joe Manchin's office was subpoenaed as part of a federal grand jury investigation.

According to that blog, the subpoenas are seeking records and contracts for businesses that have performed work at the governor's mansion in Charleston. The feds are curious about services for social functions held there and whether Manchin, who is a candidate for the US Senate seat made vacant by the death of Robert Byrd, complied with West Virginia contract and bidding rules.

The special election for that seat will not be held until 2012.

Manchin has not been charged with any crimes. But at least his potential dirty laundry is being brought out before he serves in Washington. Sometimes voters have to wait a while, as in the cases of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY).

UPDATE August 7: The special election is this year. I missed that news while I was vacation in Utah.
