The Florida US Senate race promises to be one of the most entertaining contests this year. So far the media focus has been mainly on the clash between conservative Republican Marco Rubio and Governor Charlie Crist, the GOP turncoat who is running as an independent.But Florida Democrats have yet to choose their candidate, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek and businessman Jeff Greene are tussling for the honor to live and fight another day in November.
Since Florida is the Sunshine State, I guess it makes sense that they have morning debates, which is what happened today. But both men appear not to be morning people--they were cranky, as the Palm Beach Post reports:
Meanwhile, Greene repeatedly referenced the criminal investigation of Miami developer Dennis Stackhouse, who has ties to Meek.Greene invested heavily in credit default swaps, which many are blaming for the housing collapse that has hit Florida especially hard. Greene won't say how much he made from them, but in the debate he gave a round figure--"hundreds of millions."
Police records show Stackhouse, arrested for fraud and grand theft, hired Meek's mother, former U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, as a $90,000 consultant and bought her a Cadillac Escalade. Stackhouse also helped Meek's district director buy a house.
"The only job you really created in the last few years was one for your mother as a consultant," Greene said.
Meek denied any wrongdoing and criticized Greene for mentioning his mother.
Wow.
Greene is a Democrat who used to be a Republican before he was a Democrat.
His take: "Whether I was a Republican or Democrat, who cares?"
He reminds me of Charlie Crist.
